Muammar Gaddafi was killed in his hometown of Sirte by Libyan rebel forces today  beginning a new chapter for the country’s history.

The announcement came from Libyan de facto Prime Minister, Mahmoud Jibril, who announced the news in a press conference earlier today.

“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” Jibril said, “Muammar Gaddafi has been killed.”

Images of a bloodied Gaddafi have been circulated over the Internet, as his lifeless body was moved to a nearby mosque in Misrata.

The former dictator was reported to die from wounds suffered to his head and legs.
